To Market, To Market

Within ten minutes from our home are 3 grocery store chains, but yet I still choose to make a 45 minute to an hour drive to the world market once a month.   So why would I make this trip with the added expense of gas and time? Well, i am so glad you asked...

LOWER prices on everything that is a whole food.  I can certainly find organic cereals cheaper at Kroger or Publix, but that is not what I am there for anyway.

FRESH bread, cheeses, meats, fish, produce galore, spices and the list goes on!! Did I mention the great selections of coffee?

TREATS for me to enjoy while I shop...If I want a quick snack I can stop at the bakery case and order a tasty pastry and a cup of coffee. Or if I get hungry and want a full fledged lunch,  I can eat at their Market "Restaurant" bar, which boasts of fresh natural and organic ingredients.

The option to purchase BULK items such as legumes, nuts, grains, and much more.  I have been expanding our supply of bulk items for the last couple of years. Without a doubt it saves us money and makes my life easier.

Don't like going solo? Neither do I! Over the years I have found traveling buddies to go with. We take turns driving, making it more cost effective.

Loaded up and ready to go...

We like to bring our own bags

Now, I would so enjoy sharing pictures of some of the their amazing goodies but this sign greets me at the door upon entering...

Yeah. Bummer, right?   But if you are local and want to explore what they offer, you can go to and see pics they have uploaded themselves.

Look at these pretty ladies!

Yeah, there is not a lot of space to loiter, but if you can find a spot that is not in the flow of market traffic...go for it! And finally...

Love. Thy. Lettuce.

Yeah. I'm a goober.

And if all that is not enough to convince you to venture to a world market near you, here is what some of traveling buddies are saying:

"The farmer's market has a wide variety of local organic food at good prices. I can shop there and feel good about what I'm feeding my family. Between the market and other sources, I'm able to get as close as possible to farm to table food"  - traveling buddy Heather

"I like knowing that what I'm buying is going to be fresh." - travel buddy Courtney

"I love the selection and great prices for organic. And of course time with you!" (hey, I'm just quoting what was said here) - travel buddy Donna

I will leave you with one final photo and two important pieces of information if you decide to go to this particular market.

1. Bring a sweater. They keep it pretty cool in there all year round.
2. NO credit cards are accepted. Debit card, cash or check. Hot bar and restaurant are cash only.

Most of the goods I purchased
Have you been to a local farmer's market? What was your experience?

Balancing Tasks and Play is Serious Business

I get so distracted by things that need to be cleaned, texts on my phone, emails on my phone and computer, what I am going to make for lunch and dinner, obligations to those outside of the family that I haven't met yet and the list goes on.

Last night while tossing and turning a memory from the day came to mind. My three year old was tugging on my arm to get my attention, which was fully engaged on the computer. I look over at him, at those eyes that you can get lost in and a smile that literally melts my heart. There is not much more time before his next birthday. Not much time at all. Right now is the stage where he likes to cuddle. He sits next to me, playing with his toy. I kiss his tousled, brown hair and he leans into me.  Takes my breath away.

At another point in the day my 9 year old asked me a question for the third time. I responded sharply and brought tears to his eyes. Grace. I need grace and I need to give grace.  Once realizing my error I put aside yet another attention captor and talk with him. Really listen to him. Then we went back to his room so that he could show me what he is learning on the piano. I am forgiven. He feels loved.

Distractions not only can steal sweet moments and teaching opportunities, they can also lead me to self-absorbtion. That is why irritation can arise bringing forth a hasty, unkind reply. I feel interrupted from what I want to do.  However, I understand that there are some things I HAVE to do and they also need to learn to be patient. I am working towards that balance of task and play, scheduling my day so that I can make sure I have quality time with them.  Even before marriage and children there was a need for this with my family and friends.

After a trip to the park we came home in good spirits, laughing and joking with each other. I was able to return to my tasks and they played together because they felt invested in.

What does your schedule look like? How do you balance your tasks and play? I can use all the help I can get!

And one color photo for the outfit...

Top and cami were gifts from Wet Seal, Black/White jeans haven been in the closet, scarf was a gift and the sherpa booties that you can hardly see were purchased with Gap rewards.

Hot Pink Pants, They Do Enchant

Maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but color is clothing anyway.  With Valentine's Day coming up tomorrow, I thought I would dispel the gloomy weather with a cheery attitude and hot pink pants.  Now if only my outfit selections could come together as quickly as my boys throw theirs together.

The sweater and collar shirt are older. The hot pink "Toothpicks" are from JCrew and were a clearance find right before Christmas.  The shoes, which I love were purchased at Nine West while I was visiting Indianapolis for a conference. The mall was a short walk from the conference center and I could not help ducking into a store or two. :)

Layering bracelets have been in for awhile now, but I haven't been able to fit extra jewelry into the budget right now so I am attempting to make what I have work.  The first bracelet is Lia Sophia, the Pandora is my newest addition from Christmas and the name bracelet was a gift at my first born's baby shower.  I would love to add a watch to this mix!! Like maybe this one...

...HA! It was fun to try it on anyway.

Do you have any Valentine's Day plans? Are you putting together a special outfit?

Off to a Birthday Party

So, the party is an hour and I'm sitting at my computer in a pair of oversized corduroys and a zip up hoodie. It's one of those afternoons where jeans are unappealing, too cold outside for a casual dress, and I've been wearing leggings all week. Guess it's not just the day. Ha!

Well, I'm off to try to do something with my mess of hair and the slovenly look that I'm clinging to today. It is someone's 40th birthday but it will be a casual affair where kids are allowed, but I am not going in sweats even if that's what I feel like wearing.

After quite a few changes I threw in the towel, sucked in my gut and chose this outfit.

The jacket, Gap jeans, shirt (Wet Seal) and earrings were all either hand-me-downs or gifts. The boots were my own investment at NineWest about 2 years ago. Simple, but I felt put together in spite of the fact that I waited till arrival to button my jeans. :)

Tempted by the dessert table

One happy boy
These shots were taken by a sweet photographer at the birthday party, unbeknown to me at the time. What a pleasure it was to find these "tags" on Facebook.  I especially loved the pictures of the boys! Here is a link to her Facebook page if you are interested in seeing more of her work. Iron and Lace Photography

New way to wear your purse - ha!
Thank you Kelsee! :)
